Come On, You Gutless MAGA Republicans: Admit Why You're Actually Voting for Trump
It's not because of the price of bacon
An in-law of mine lives in Florida, and last week, as Hurricane Milton came barreling toward the state, she told my wife that FEMA had run out of money and that the only people who were helping relief efforts was an organization known for being anti-trans. This person went to college. She was a school teacher and a principal. Until she got sucked into the Fox News fever swamp, she had at least a passing familiarity with reality.
What President Obama warned about many years ago when Donald Trump was running for President for the first time has come to pass: There is no longer a set of facts that the country can agree upon. A terrifying CBS News poll out over the weekend officially established this. Upsettingly, CBS News only reported the poll and did not set the record straight.
Sixty-five percent of Trump voters believe that hurricane relief funds are going to people who aren't impacted by hurricanes. Eighty-three percent of Trump voters also believe the relief funds are going to people in America illegally. Eighty-seven percent of those votes believe that the economy right now is bad. Eighty-four percent believe that prices are still going up. Over half of Trump voters think that border crossing continues to go up and that the Biden Administration is trying to increase the number of border crossings. Sixty-two percent believe that efforts to increase gender equality have gone too far, and nearly half believe that voter fraud will be widespread in the 2024 election and that Donald Trump should challenge the results.
It's easy to fact-check these beliefs and show they are wrong, but it doesn't matter. These same voters believe that fact-checking is a woke form of censorship. Donald Trump won't even agree to sit for interviews where reporters are allowed to fact-check.
I don't know how else to say this except: We are profoundly f**ked. Some of this will go away after the election -- remember all those caravans full of migrants that seemed to be marching toward the border right up until the day after the election in 2018, 2020, and 2022, only to disappear by Thanksgiving. If Trump loses, and if democracy does not impale itself in the wake of the election, hopefully, it will not rise to this level again.
Because this is bad. Look out your window, folks: Do you see any migrants murdering, raping, or eating cats? Look at the stock market (all-time highs), the unemployment rate (historically low), and the inflation rate (tamed). Crime is down, and no, the FBI did not exclude cities in their numbers. Yes, we pay more for bacon and raisin bran, but we make more, too, and the prices are not going to magically go down if a lunatic is in office.
You want to vote for Trump because you believe in isolationism and want to see America leave the Middle East, Ukraine, and the rest of the world to its own devices? Fine. If you want to vote for Trump because he will cruelly attempt to deport millions of people, including many who are here legally, at least that's reality (the other reality is that prices will go up when the country loses millions of people still willing to work minimum wage). You want a guy that will populate his administration with Project 2025 people -- as he did his last administration -- who want to pass a national abortion ban, outlaw porn, and put the 10 Commandments in every classroom? Hey, at least that's based in reality. Do you want a guy who watches Fox News all day, sends threatening social media messages to foreign leaders, and — let’s be honest — may very well die in the next four years and leave the country in the hands of J.D. Vance? Then vote for the Republican, my friend.
But for God’s sake, vote for Trump because you're an asshole, not because you believe that Kamala Harris is personally handing out checks to people crossing the border and sending hurricanes to red states. Be a man, you f**king "alpha males" and admit why you actually are voting for Trump: Because you are afraid that existing power structures are crumbling. You are afraid that more of power will be distributed to women and people of color. And you’re willing to risk Democracy — and put the lives and livelihoods of millions of people at risk — to save your seat at the head of America’s dinner table.
But let me just quickly remind you of this, motherfuckers: The Women’s March, Me Too, and the Black Lives Matter movements were part of the resistance efforts during Trump’s presidency. That was us when you won.
The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice, as they say, and win or lose this November, we will not shut up. We will continue to bend that goddamn arc. We’re fighting for justice, and you’re just fighting for the right to make up shit on Twitter. The stakes are just higher for us. And make no mistake, either: We want to win this November, we will win in November, but in the event that we do not, like all the Whos in Whoville, we will continue to rain hell with our voices until we get all our goddamn presents.
Whenever I hear people screaming about inflation, they never seem to finish their thought. It's not "inflation." It's price gouging. Look at how much profit these companies are raking in. Look at all the stock buy-backs.
If you think you're suffering under "inflation" and want the government to do something about it, what you're actually advocating for is tighter government regulation - which out of the other side of their mouths, these people will claim is killing businesses.
So what is it that you ACTUALLY want? Other than to be angry all the time?
This gets at something I've said for years: In the history of everything, the conservative, regressive views have never won, long-term. They'll win a battle, but never, ever ever the war. Like, look at Roe v Wade. They fought for 50 years, stacking the courts at every level, spent hundreds of millions of $$s fighting it, and finally overturned it on the back of jamming through two SC justices. Cool. You won the battle.
And what has it wrought? Since the ruling, every state-wide initiative to expand abortion access has succeeded, while every one to restrict it has failed, usually by massive margins. The under 25 women demo is now voting 75/25 Democratic and at a higher rate than in decades. So, cool. You won the battle. Prepare to lose the war.
