I don’t love writing Donald Trump, even when it’s about how terrible he is doing. I find it so much more fulfilling, uplifting, and less crazy-making to write about Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. And that’s why I’d like to frame Trump’s meltdown this weekend as an act perpetrated by the Harris campaign. Harris is getting into his head.
The Harris campaign—which has 1 million Truth Social followers—has been taunting Trump about the thing that he cares about the most—crowd size—on a social media site that he owns and tagging him in all the posts. She is trolling him. Is it any wonder that he posted the following deranged, conspiratorial word salad over the weekend?
What is there even to say about this except that Kamala Harris continues to make this man look small and weak as he tries, in vain, to bolster a conspiracy theory that is refuted by literally hundreds and hundreds of photos taken by the very people in attendance at these rallies.
He’s definitely not falling behind, either.
To be fair, Trump did cite a few polls that had him barely leading in a handful of swing states, but those polls were from a Republican pollster, Trafalgar. Meanwhile, the NYTimes/Sienna polls show that Harris has a fairly sizeable lead in the three states she needs to win: Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.
The polls are not predictive, but they do reflect the current mood, and the current mood is that Harris is killing it while Trump continues to flail around. The attacks on JD Vance are working incredibly well (and the Harris campaign should repeatedly emphasize how likely it is that Vance could serve as President if Trump is elected), and a Financial Times poll even shows that Harris is more trusted than Trump on the economy, previously seen as a major weakness for her.
More importantly, the polls are getting into Trump’s head. There are still 85 days left until the election, and anything can happen — and there will be at least one debate that could shift sentiment again — but it’s hard to imagine that a guy who is spiraling pulling out of it when every time he speaks, he digs himself in deeper.
— An Iranian group apparently hacked the Trump campaign and sent troves of information to Politico and other media outlets, but the only material they apparently got was vetting materials on JD Vance. The Democrats clearly don’t need additional oppo on Vance.
— The news cycle moves so fast that the fact Donald Trump, on Friday, confused Willie Brown for another Black politician, Nate Holden, is already old news. For what it’s worth, it reinforces not just that Donald Trump can’t tell Black people apart, but it’s another sign of his cognitive decline.
— Kamala Harris is on the cover of Time this week.
— The DNC is next week. Bill and Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Barack Obama will all speak. They better give Josh Shapiro a good speaking slot, too! And Whitmer. And Evers.
— For what it’s worth, violent crime continues to fall in the United States following an uptick during COVID.
— I don’t know who was asking for this, but I ain’t mad at it: The Biden Administration is trying to make it easier to cancel subscriptions. A proposed FTC rule would make it as easy to cancel a subscription as it is to sign up. Thanks, Biden!
One could call it petty that the Harris campaign has set up a beachhead on Truth Social to taunt Trump over his insecurities.
But, candidly, this is what I've been waiting for since Obama first ran in 2007. I want someone to punch the bully square in the nose.
At a certain point, it'll need to stop, lest we become what we hate. But, for now, I'm glad that the Harris campaign is willing to demonstrate that we won't be pushed around any longer.
I am just reveling in the schadenfreude. We're not out of the woods yet but I've been waiting for this motherfucker's downfall since the 90's. I've been patient and I've earned it.
"I'm doing really well in the Presidential Race..."
Sure sweetie.
