Habba thought she could turn this experience into a Fox-news on air gig, methinks. She gambled and lost, like the shart Trump is. Although, these people are all so delusional, she might still find a way to spin fake gold out of it. Even with all the proof to the contrary, people line up to have their lives tanked by this fool, who has ZERO loyalty to anyone, but expects 100% unwavering loyalty from everyone. Why don't these people learn? It's utterly confounding.

One of the great mysteries of our time is the sheer number of people willing to offer total and unwavering loyalty, while completely humiliating themselves and torching their careers and reputations, in the service of a man who wouldn't spit on them if they were on fire.

Honestly, the devotion the followers of the above folks had, sad as it was, at least had a more rational explanation than the Trumpism cult does. It is much easier to explain how those folks came to develop cults than it is with Trump.

re why they don't learn:

See "Journal of Shitty Logic" Vol. 56, Issue 4: article "If I Fly Into the Sun, How Long Before I'm Tan But NOT on Fire?"

ETA- snark aside, I think it's a lot like the delusion that keeps casinos rich. There's good fast money there as long as you don't get "dumb and greedy" and stay long enough to lose. Except the dumb greedy part has already happened by the time you tell yourself that.

Especially after Giuliani has had to file bankruptcy from all the millions he now owes in damages from carrying water for Trump. You would think that, if nothing else, would give people pause.

Expand full comment

Right?! That alone is so absolutely amazing, and the fact more people don't use that as a cautionary tale is truly sad/bewildering. Who, exactly, has gone on to have a better life after pledging their loyalty to Trump? Anyone?

Expand full comment

I think that's the critical point. By and large, hardly anyone has benefitted from directly helping Trump (as opposed to just loudly supporting him). All the lawyers who staked their careers on representing him are basically disgraced or disbarred, so what exactly does Alina think will come of this? He lost, twice and will likely lose on appeal - does she really think he'll thank her for her good work?

No example immediately springs to mind of someone who fooled the people, and swept in on such a wave of goodwill ... and fell so hard and so fast.

I fear that Fetterman is on the same path, but can't think of anyone else.

I mean everyone knew Manchin was a coal-huffing toadie, so he didn't fool anyone.

I like the idea of a PL for politics. It's not as if there's a shortage of news. In news I enjoy, apparently Tim Scott got smacked by Trump allies for shopping oppo research on Stefanik. Such a tri-hard. And he's all like, "Fake news!" I thought Trump might actually consider Scott for VP but now I don't because 45 has talked shit about him...to his face...on national damned television. I'm going to be looking for the person he hasn't talked smack about to be his VP, Hmm. On the other hand, he may be auditioning candidates to see who can supplicate the most.

It's not a bad bet. Particularly if he's looking for the means to get Nikki Haley to quit. I don't think that would work though. He's gotta figure out how to get Haley's donors to stop shoveling money at her, and TFG's pissed off enough of the wealthy moneyed minority that fund not-crazy Confederat . . er . . Republicans.

Expand full comment

I've also been thinking that for awhile. I don't see him picking anyone who ran against him, even when they fall at his feet to endorse him. Noem is good at fundraising and has put in a lot of time sucking up to him. I also think Elise Stefanik is a good bet but Trump is figuring out politics just well enough that he might get that it's good to keep her in House leadership carrying water for him.

Expand full comment

The more I think about this the more I agree that he won't pick anyone who ran against him. 45 only has one play book and in 2016 he didn't consider any of his competition for VP, so there's no reason to think he would now. Even though none of them except Haley (too little too late) criticized 45, the fact that they dared run against him is probably enough - heck, we're seeing it in the way he humiliated Scott. 45 never said anything about Scott when he was running for the nomination. Now I think Scott was just a who-dis non-entity to him.

The House also advanced two articles of their dumb impeachment attempt against Mayorkas for his “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” and "breach of the public trust" for his supposed inaction at the border. While of course, still sitting on the border deal.

I want to be surprised by the audacity of the GOP getting a border deal and then tanking it because Trump doesn't want Biden to look good, but I am not. The minute anything they do might benefit an enemy, it's a no-go. The pettiness is impressive.

See also Chuck Grassley saying the quiet part out loud - if we pass the child tax credit extension, it will benefit Biden and help him win re-election - Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) criticized the measure, which nonpartisan estimates say could lift 400,000 children out of poverty, because it could help Biden’s reelection campaign. He said he would evaluate the bill after the House vote.

“I think passing a tax bill that makes the president look good — may allow checks before the election — means that he can be reelected and then we won’t extend the 2017 tax cuts,” Grassley said. (per Washington Post)

In good news, an Iowa Legislature subcommittee killed a bill that would strip legal protections from transgender folks and reclassify them as disabled. They would still have protections, but it gets gray as to what and how. Enough activists showed up today to scare lawmakers - or so we all hope. I know some of them in edge districts think the anti-choice legislation also floated is already endangering them.

In bad news, I suspect enough Confederates in the party actually thought this bill was too much of a compromise and that's the real reason they killed it. They just want to strip transgender individuals of all their protections.

“Alina Habba torched her legal career” implies she had one. Lawyers who are driven to fame like she is will not concede mistakes and do not learn.

Expand full comment

There's a reason that lower tier lawyers like Habba represent him now. The highly credible ones won't touch him as a client now. He has some good ones - mostly the ones who think they're fighting for a higher constitutional principle than representing Trump per se, but the ones representing him personally are not the type of lawyers that people of his means and stature would ordinarily hire - which probably explains the misguided loyalty. They think its because he sees their greatness, when its really because better lawyers won't accept his business anymore. He also needs lawyers he can bully and push around to carry his water for him so he needs them to be eternally grateful to him. Habba fits the bill perfectly - nothing about her practise suggests she should be anywhere near a client like Trump.

I don’t feel bad for Alina, she took a job she was unqualified to do. She chose to humiliate herself. I saw an interview where she said she’s been asked if she’d rather be pretty or smart, and she said “you can fake being smart”. Except in a courtroom, apparently.
