I’m not keen to politicize a tragic accident that claimed the lives of 65 people. We don’t yet know why a passenger jet crashed into a helicopter, and I’m not sure a political administration can be blamed for an accident that occurred just days after they took office.
But I do know this: The response so far has been embarrassing—starting with the President himself, who is already fueling insane conspiracy theories. “The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time. It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn. Why didn’t the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane?”
“This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented,” Trump added. “NOT GOOD!!!”
Sean Duffy, the former Real World cast member turned newly sworn-in Secretary of Transportation, didn’t offer much wisdom either. “Obviously, it is not standard to have aircraft collide. I want to be clear on that,” he said at a press conference. Really, Sean? REALLY? THANK YOU, CAPTAIN OBVIOUS.
The person who should be addressing the American public is Michael Whitaker, the head of the FAA—except we don’t have a head of the FAA because he resigned ahead of Trump’s inauguration at Elon Musk’s insistence after he criticized SpaceX’s safety record.
And while last night’s accident may not have been directly caused by this administration, future accidents likely will be—because among the 2.3 million federal employees offered buyouts earlier this week were air traffic controllers, a profession already facing a critical shortage.
All of which is to say: The government is not Twitter! If you fuck up on Twitter, a few bad tweets slip through, or the site goes down for a few minutes. If you screw up in government, people lose their benefits, cancer researchers lose their funding, senior citizens lose their Medicaid, and AIRPLANES CRASH INTO HELICOPTERS.
We shouldn’t hesitate to politicize it at all. This is basically a war for America. There aren’t rules. If this happened under Biden, the entire conservative movement would say it’s because of woke, and the media would follow their lead.
The overwhelming sentiment after a week plus of Trump, even for low info voters who can’t remember to breathe without a reminder, is chaos and confusion. This plays directly into that. Democrats should be on camera constantly talking about how this is a result of putting incompetent reality tv morons and rapist drunks in charge. This is what happens when you force out qualified people because they don’t believe in your insane election lies. This is what happens when tech idiots with no experience fire people en masse. People die when republicans are in charge, and more people are doing to die if and when ghouls like RFK and Tulsi Gabbard take over.
That’s the message. It doesn’t matter if it’s technically true. It fits the narrative you want to drive.
It's really disconcerting that the President of the United States is posing questions about an accident that claimed over 65 lives.
Dude, if you don't know what's going on, just shut the fuck up until you do.
