One could call it petty that the Harris campaign has set up a beachhead on Truth Social to taunt Trump over his insecurities.

But, candidly, this is what I've been waiting for since Obama first ran in 2007. I want someone to punch the bully square in the nose.

At a certain point, it'll need to stop, lest we become what we hate. But, for now, I'm glad that the Harris campaign is willing to demonstrate that we won't be pushed around any longer.

Their press release after Trump's utterly unhinged "presser" was thing of beauty. A list of concise refutations of most of the lies he spewed, with sources, but also a funny and arch tone making fun of him at the same time.

It should be framed and hung on a wall.

I loved reading that. So glad these dems know how to fight back, fucking finally.

the reality is "going high" hasn't really panned out - if anything, it has been the Dems' obsessive focus on "civility" over the genuine threat that the GOP in its current form poses that has let them be outflanked. "Civility" is very much the ivory tower/debate club bullshit that gets people labelled as "elites", especially when it is trotted out in lieu of fighting for issues that matter and it very much feeds into the performative progressiveness that drives people crazy.

I think its why Walz's "weird" landed so strongly - because that's how people actually speak. Its far more relatable to people. Even when Hilary was calling MAGA a basket of deplorables, the "feigned offence" from Trump supporters was little more than a strategic understanding that Democrats would probably spend more time beating themselves up over Hilary's inelegant (if completely accurate) choice of words and decided to lean into it.

That said, the Dems won't win by simply trolling Trump - substance, at least from the Dems has to enter the discussion. But the fact that they are now showing a willingess to do so, i.e. push back, shows a degree of courage they haven't displayed in years - and frankly a genuine sense of humour.

AGREE!!!! We've all been watching, for YEARS, that the tactic of 'playing fair' against a giant bully does.not.work. Once she's in office, then we can play by the rules, but until then? Throw every dirty trick right back at him. Typical bully, can't take being bullied. However, I do worry about the debates. I'm not as impressed with a lot of folks about her debating skills, and with him being so unhinged, she could easily get rattled and start babbling. Hopefully she's gotten better in the past few years.

Despite what he keeps repeating about a Fox and NBC debates, Harris campaign keeps saying he's full of shit. From her campaign aide yesterday to the press:

"We're pleased Trump finally agreed to debate the Vice President on ABC after previously trying to back out. We are open to another debate, and we'll continue those conversations. But to be clear, any additional debate would be subject to Trump actually showing up on September 10. We're not playing his games."

Expand full comment

I don't think you have to worry about Harris's debate skills because - as Trump has proven time and time again - he's not there to discuss policy. In fact, I'd argue there are less policy points for him to discuss than there were in 2016 or even 2020.

I would expect Trump to make the same moves as he did with Hillary and try to intimidate her by lurking around the stage. Obviously, he'll try to interrupt. In both cases, I can see Harris putting him in his place. She won't try to ignoring him like Clinton did and she knows enough from Biden's "Shut up, man." moment to know that still has juice.

Trump got away with his "nasty woman" talk in 2016 because it was so new and unprecedented, but because he goes back to that same well over and over whenever ANY woman challenges him, I just don't think the tactics he used in 2016 will and the same way. And Harris is frankly a seasoned politician who is more than familiar with the infamous "angry black woman" trope and is savvy enough not to fall for it.

That said, for Trump debate "success" is judged on a very different curve than for virtually any other politician s- substance is irrelevant, he seems to only be judged by how he can apparently visually dominate his opponents - so I'd be surprised if it ultimately moves the needle much. But holy shit I hope Democrats don't have a conniption if she is not deemed to have sufficiently "wiped the floor with him" (as that appears to be the grading curve she will be subject to)......because again, debates are for television - they mean nothing and have no bearing on how someone would govern, so we need to stop affording so much attention and significance to them.

I see where you’re coming from, but I think there’s a difference between debating someone like Pete Buttegieg and someone who lies, doesn’t know one Black person from another, and is likely to use racial/gender/both slurs. I honestly don’t know what Trump would be able to say that she hasn’t heard already, from better.

The Times finally decided to do some dogged reporting… on Trump not knowing who he took a helicopter ride with. They had like a few days in a row trying to figure out who he was talking about. Where the fuck has this been for the last nine years.

I feel like a lot of the media only acts when they think they smell blood in the water. Trump actually looking weak- in ways understood by the lowest common denominator and bullies themselves- seems to prod the media into examining him in ways they should've all along.

Agreed. The media has generally been cowed by providing "both sides" coverage to the point that they're "letting the reader decide" at best up to obfuscating reality at worst. It would only make sense for the Times to dig in like this if it were clearly unavoidable.

Is the Times running out of columnists explaining how Kamala needs to tailor her campaign to centrist Republicans who will surely vote for her this time even though they have always defaulted to Trump regardless of his weaknesses before? Have they exhausted all the arguments for tacking to an imaginary middle ground that keeps moving more and more to the right as the Republican party attaches rocket boosters to the Overton Window? Are the privileged scions of the wealthy who cosplay as reporters getting tired of writing blather about how we all just don't understand the economic anxiety of people who have plenty of money for T shirts, flags, donations, boats, convoy and plane tickets to the capital when they don't get their way? Are they just now getting ready to write how batshit insane it is that Republicans bring in autocrats who openly mock representative democracy to speak at their conventions? Can it at long last be that the NYT is going to try to exist in the hellscape of a country they contribute to by covering Trump like a garden variety candidate instead of the outlier he is?

I love this excitement, and this strategy. It’s about time and it’s perfectly executed. I’m also not worried about the debate. She’s not the most skilled at debate but I think she is in her power now and he won’t be able to intimidate or bait her.

I am getting worried about the convention. I just read that tens of thousands of Pro-Palestinian protestors will be in the city. If she can’t truly and earnestly address them or that horrific situation… the vibes will be severely diminished, to say the least.

With the latest reports coming out about the treatment of prisoners, I am not sure there is anything Israel can do to redeem itself in the public eye. I am truly disgusted by that government, and it seems like basically every soldier in the IDF is a war criminal now.

In addition to the tens of millions of dollars AIPAC spent defeating two (very flawed Squad members)… I hate this feeling but do we really want Josh Shapiro speaking at the convention? Or will it be too inflammatory?

Serious question: why aren't they also protesting at GOP events? If he wins, he will be even worse for Palestine. I'm not sure what they hope protesting here achieves besides awareness (but is awareness needed at this point?). Biden, not Harris, is in charge of making US decisions on Palestine right now. If they don't want to vote Harris because of Biden's decisions, then they are defacto voting for Trump. That's reality. And that will be worse for Palestine.

Oh, I know that! But people are emotional and sometimes dumb.

We had people protesting for Palestine in the late Spring, but they trashed our library, crashed outdoor concerts, and ruined a bunch of fun stuff instead of challenging people who actually do want Palestine destroyed. It’s nonsensical.

Oh, to your question— I’d guess it’s partly purity politics but also a legitimate fear of harm if they crashed Trump event.

Fear of harm for sure. But then, protesters have been bashed by cops on college campuses, and by Zionists with the cops just standing by and watching (UCLA) so...

Why aren't any Democrats, etc, etc, etc, protesting at GOP events? As Jenne F said, fear of harm - like getting the shit beaten out of them. Plus, the current president is a democrat, and is enabling the genocide in Gaza.

And Trump would be awful, but I honestly cannot see how it can get worse for Palestinians. After the latest Israeli bombing of a school, where displaced people were praying, over 90 people were killed. Since they were standing close together as they prayed, body parts were all over the place and individuals could not be distinguished. Medical staff were collecting about 7 kg of parts, put them each in shrouds, and gave them to people who had lost loved ones. What else to do?

I cannot imagine how Trump could be worse.
